Delicious Rayons Packaging

Here's a few photos of the physical cd packaging for Rayons' album, "After the Noise is Gone".
Based on the sounds and themes in Rayons' playing as well as the influences and talks we had during our travels through the final chapters of 2011 we developed a story for an animation and used the imagery and characters for the album artwork. We will spill more when the animation is released - very shortly!
Catch some glimpses of the inside of the cd package, as well as some nice extras pre-order folks picked up. There's also a little liner note booklet included with some additional illustrations... but we'll leave that surprise for people who pick up the cd for now.

朝から粉雪の降り続けている土曜日、いつものようにミーティングのために近所のカフェに行ってきた帰りに、RayonsのCD「After the Noise is Gone」が日本から届いていました！

ああ、だから朝から雪がふっていたのかと納得をしながら包みを開けると何枚かのCDの完成品と予約特典（？）として作られたポストカードやステッカーが！

このCDデザインのお話を最初にもらったのは、去年の１１月にエストニア旅の最後に空港で乗り換えの飛行機を待ってる時でした。
おかげでRayonsさんのこのCDを聴くと、その時の空港の匂いや雰囲気・エストニアやプラハの町を歩いている気分が心の中に浮かびあがってきます。
同封のブックレットにはまた別のイラストレーションが数点入っていますが、その紹介はまた今度の機会にここで。
今はCDを手に入れた人達だけのサプライズという事にしておきたいと思います。

Rayons "Halfway" Trailer

As the debut album for Rayons, After the Noise is Gone, comes out on Wednesday (1/18), and the animated video for one of the tracks is a little ways off, we were asked to put together a brief trailer to advertise the release and tease the upcoming full animation.

CDジャケットデザインを担当しました音楽家Rayons（レイヨン）さんの1stアルバム「After the noise is gone」が1/18に発売になることにあわせて短いトレイラー映像が公開されています。

The animation will be using the track, Halfway, from the album, featuring the vocals of Predawn. As with the work we did with Kira Kira's last album, Our Map to the Monster Olympics, where the album artwork and later animated video were tightly linked, so too with Rayons' album and video.
We will be sharing more images from the album in the next few days and when the animation is finally released, the connections will be very clear. We are very excited for both pieces of the project to come out, and very grateful to be a part of this with the wonderful music of Rayons!

Imagery from the album artwork has also been nicely used for Rayons' current website. The menu icons are especially great.

使用曲は同アルバムに収録されています。

CDの中身と映像がリンクする造りはKiraKiraの Our Map to the Monster Olympics以来ですね。

ビデオのみを見た事ある人がCDを発見してまた楽しめるし、CDを持ってる人はいつの日かビデオを見つけて、お〜あの絵が動いてる！…という風に楽しんでもらえたらいいなと思っています。

Rayonsさんの特設HPもあって、私達が作ったのではないですが世界観を統一してくれていて素敵なのでぜひ見てみてくださいね。

Rayons

As we waited to board the plane from Tallinn to Prague we received a curious email from the manager of Predawn (we collaborated with the singer/songwriter last year at the flau organized event, Foundland) at HIP LAND MUSIC asking if we would be interested in working with a new artist, Rayons, on their debut album (on the Rondade label in Japan). Rayons is lovely, subtle music, with plenty of curiosity and mystery and touches of longing and darkness. It is mainly piano with cello and ambient noise accompaniment and Predawn adds vocals on a number of tracks.
We've already created the album artwork - the cover of which you can see up top (with images of the back and inside, as well as photos of the printed, physical digipak coming soon!) and the album goes on sale January 18th, although some sites already have it listed (Amazon, Tower Records, PCI Music)

来年1/18に発売されるRayonsの1stミニアルバム”After The Noise Is Gone”のアルバムのデザインを担当しました。
Rayons（レイヨン）は現代音楽家・中井雅子さんのソロプロジェクトで、日本の Rondadeというレーベルからのリリースです。 (ただいまAmazonやTower Records, PCI Musicなどで予約受付中です)

きっかけは少し前、先月エストニア・タリンを訪ねた旅のあと、Wifi放題のタリンの空港でプラハ行きの飛行機を待ってる時に頂いたメールでした。去年の夏、 flauさん主催のイベントFoundlandでご一緒したPredawnさんのマネージャーさんからで、来年デヴューする現代音楽家Rayonsさんの音楽のためのアートワークの相談を受けたところから、とんとんと話が進んでコラボレーションさせてもらうことになりました。この中で３曲、predawnさんがボーカルで参加しています。

上にある画像が、アルバムカバーになります。ジャケットの中の画像等はまたCDが届いた時にここでお見せしますね。

Now we are working on an animated video for one of the tracks on the album - with a super tight deadline! So our holiday season is going to be filled with late nights and graphite shavings on everything. But we really wouldn't want it any other way.

そして、このアルバムの中の一曲を使用した映像も、ただいま制作中です…！
そのことについてはまた後日、詳しくお伝えしたいと思います。どうぞお楽しみに。

これから別の作業場に移って、雪に閉ざされた中で（まだ積もってませんがイメージ的に）本格的に制作の海に潜りたいと思います。

Tallinn Tabi 11/15~11/22

As previously mentioned, we just returned from Tallinn, Estonia where BLESS screened at the Animated Dreams festival! In addition to screenings there were also a lot of excellent talks and events and we had the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful animators and animation-related folks!
We also managed to fit in a bit of sight-seeing (Tallinn is amazing!) and we thought we'd recap some of the experience here.

エストニアのタリンで開催されたアニメーション映画祭Animated Dreamsを訪ねて11/15~11/22の間１週間旅に出かけてきました。
今まで海外の映画祭での上映は何回かありましたが遠いこともあり、いつも行けずじまいでした。今回は「BLESS」が上映されるということと二人とも行ってみたかったエストニアンアニメーションの産地！ということで思い切って現地に行ってみる事にしました。
これが映画祭という物なのか…といろいろと経験＆勉強する事ばかりでした。
今回も写真とともに私達の旅を少しだけ紹介してみようと思います。

The festival screening and event locations were in various buildings around the city. The Sõprus Theater, pictured here, is where many of the main screenings were shown, including ours. It is a beautiful old theater!

いくつかある会場のうちのひとつ、Soprusシアターです。ここで「BLESS」の上映がありました。

We were given the opportunity to speak about BLESS before its screening. It was a little rambling, but still we are always glad to talk on our process and the story behind the animation. In the photo we are with Mari-Liis Rebane, program coordinator for the festival and the woman who contacted us initially to screen. She is lovely and it was great getting to meet her in person!

We also had the opportunity to meet Rao Heidmets, an award winning animator and director, who premiered a new film of his own at the festival, Coming of Oracle...?
We were introduced to him over the internet through a mutual friend, so it was wonderful getting to know him in person!

この映画祭で新作「Coming of Oracle...?」をプレミア上映したラオ・ヘイドメッツさん（奥様：左端）。友人の紹介で出発前から連絡とりあっててやっと会えました。今度は夏においで！と言われました。

There seemed to be a party of some kind every night, usually starting around 10 and lasting until breakfast. The venue above was just such a location for two events, and while set a ways walk from the town and far out behind a train yard, it was always bustling.

会場でもある首都のタリンはとても治安がいいのか、駅の裏の廃線エリアのような真っ暗の砂利道を１０分くらい歩いて行ったような、ほんとうに何もない場所にこのパーティ会場があり、一人で歩いて行ったり帰ってたりしてる人も良く見かけました。
この建物も外は素っ気ないですが中はとてもきれいな作りで人でいっぱいでした。

＿スタジオ訪問

Part of the festival included visits to animation studios, namely Nukufilm (focusing on stopmotion) and Joonisfilm (focusing on 2D), two incredible, award winning studios! They were both inspiring creation nests and we learned a lot on each visit!

今まさにアニメーターさん達が仕事している所を見学させてもらいました。

今まで他のアニメーションスタジオでどういう風に作っているかなんて見たこともなかったので、自分達と同じような手法でもっと大きなプロダクションではどのようにして制作しているのかを見れたこと、本当に良い経験でした。参考になることがたくさんありました。

＿タリンの町並み

And now some general sightseeing information. Every year at Christmas time Tallinn erects this enormous tree. It is the oldest public Christmas tree display tradition in Europe, apparently. A temporary market is set up along with the tree, but unfortunately didn't open until after we left.

ヨーロッパで一番古い歴史を持つ、クリスマスツリーを飾る広場。私達が行った時はちょうど木の設置が終わって、周りを囲むようにクリスマスマーケットの準備が始まっていた所でした。

A small cafe, Bogapott, where we ate a nice soup and drank some strong coffee. A lot of nice ceramic work and apparently popular with asian tourists(?).

ボガポットというカフェにて、２階席からの眺めです。なんだか懐かしいような感じのお店でした。

オーダーした壷入りスープ。ここで出してる食器は全て隣のアートショップで買えるようでした。

In addition to simply preserved old buildings, a good number of structures have been reinterpreted or added to with very modern architecture, as can be seen above... mmm, I forget where this is though, near an event space I think.

このたてもの、イベント会場の近くだったのですがものすごく目を引きました。
とても古いものと新しいものが同居しているタリンをよく現してると思います。

＿チェコ

We also had the fortune of a super long layover in Prague (20+ hours!), so went into town, strolled around, ate out and spent the night.

帰りにプラハで２０時間の空きがあったので、空港を離れて市内でホテルをとりました。モルダウ川からの夜のプラハの眺めです。ここで「モルダウ川」を歌わずしていつ歌う、という感じで滞在中ずっと頭の中にこだましてました。

We decided to eat here, U Fleku, where they keep bringing you drinks until you beg for them stop. We came for the great beer (perfect Dark Lager), but stayed for the red cabbage and accordion player.

地元のビアホール、ウーフレク。ここに行きたくて近くの宿を取りました。

It was sort of a nice relaxing wrap party for us after the busy festival week of meeting new people and absorbing so much information and ideas.

二人だけの打ち上げを、できたての黒ビールとともに！
ここでは何も言わないと空いたグラスを片付けて次々にビールをテーブルに置かれてしまうルールです。この黒ビールを飲むためだけにもう一回プラハに行きたいくらい美味しかったな…。
真ん中にある小さなグラスは、食前酒として配られる（有料です）ヘベロフカというハーブ酒です。これも強いけど飲めてしまいそうな味。。

(Us in Tallinn)
Although we've screened at many festivals throughout Europe, we've never been able to attend any, so this was our first time to physically participate, and what a place to do it! We were told numerous times, and on very good authority, that the Animated Dreams festival is just the right size of a festival to allow for real friendships and connections to develop between folks in the animation world.
We are very grateful to have been invited to screen and we will certainly be submitting work to future festivals! Either way, we will be visiting Tallinn again.

この旅、私にとっては初めての東欧、ジェイソンに撮っては初めてのヨーロッパ。
二人とも健康ですごし、たくさんの人に会え、初めて見るものをたくさん見て、とてもよい時間でした。思えばOvertureをはじめてからこんな時間を持ったのは初めてのことでした。

さあ、もう帰ってきたのでまた制作の日々に戻ります。
近いうちに新しいお知らせができますように。

Pictoplasma Paris!

All through the month of December some of our illustrations will be showing at La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris, in the group exhibition Post Digital Monsters and as part of the Pictoplasma extravaganza taking place throughout the city.
The exhibition opening is December 7th and the exhibition ends December 31st. It is going to be great! And the gallery is new and really amazing and has been doing a lot of interesting shows. Plus the people we are showing with are super talented folks (Friends with You, Shoboshobo, etc.) and we are incredibly honored to be invited to show with them!
If you are anywhere in the Paris area in December swing by and take a look!

Oh, and the illustrations are taken from our MoonHare story set that we took with us on the Oneiric Caravan tour in Japan last summer. We'll be writing about them soon enough!

１２月７日〜３１日までパリで開催されるピクトプラズマのパリ巡回展「Pictoplasma Paris」にイラストレーションで参加します。

会場は、ポンピドゥーセンターの近くに今年３月にオープンしたばかりのメディアアートセンターLa Gaîté lyrique（ラ・ゲイテ・リリック）。
会期中は展示だけではなく映像の上映やレクチャーなど、私達がNYCで参加した時のようにたくさんのイベントが同時開催されるそうです。

今回はPost Digital Monstersというテーマなので、ムーンヘアのシリーズからムーンヘアと戦う眠れる巨人ホボマックが描かれた作品が数点展示される予定です。
パリでの展示は初だと思います。

そうだそうだ、エストニア（プラハ）での旅についてはまた写真と一緒にここでレポート書きますのでお楽しみに！今は帰ってきたばかりでたくさんの写真の中からどれがいいか選んでいる所です。

Animated Dreams in Estonia

BLESS is screening in another festival! In Estonia! And we're going!

Specifically, BLESS is screening as part of the Japanese Indie Animation category in the Animated Dreams festival (11/16-11/20), the animation end of the Black Nights Film Festival (11/16-11/30) held in Tallinn.

Even more specifically, the Japanese Indie Animation category is split into two groups and BLESS is in the Fantasy and Fanfares half. It will be screening on the 20th from 5PM.

We will be screening alongside some really amazing Japanese Indie Animators, most famous, perhaps, from the CALF label (Atsushi Wada, Mirai Mizue) and Academy Award-nominated Koji Yamamura. It is a great honor to be invited to screen among these folks! We will try and make friends with everyone.

Plus, we are going! So if you live in Tallin or are visiting let's say hello! Or if you are not around but have some recommended spots, that would also be great! We are there all next week!

エストニアの首都、タリンで開催されるBlack Nights Film Festival(11/16-11/30) 内のアニメーション映画祭Animated Dreams (11/16-11/20),で「BLESS」が上映される事になりました！そして今回は私達も会場に向かいます。

今回、日本作家の特集プログラムJapanese Indie Animationでは、作品達をイン/陰と陽/ヤンの二つに大きく分け、そのヤンの方のグループ、題して "Fantasy and Fanfares" （１１月２０日）の中で、CALFの皆さんや山村浩二さんの作品に仲間入りして上映されます。
会期中には「緑子」や「A Cat in Paris」や山村浩二さんの最新作「マイブリッジの糸」など、そしてもちろんエストニアの作家達の新作映像、他にもたくさんの作品達が上映されます。
今回はOvertureやってきて初めて、海外の映画祭に足を運んで会場で見てきます。エストニアの中世都市とエストニア独特のアニメーションの世界に浸かってこようと思います。

NYC Tabi　11/1~11/6

We just spent the last week in NYC! And while we usually visit multiple times a year, this visit was similar to our trip to LA the other week: informative. Mostly we were down for the Pictoplasma event that took place over the weekend but we also met up with many friends and got to see some really great exhibitions.

For this particular Pictoplasma we had no involvement, other than audience participation. But Bryum & Kapok and BLESS have both screened at past festivals in Berlin and we had never met Lars and Peter, the creators of the event, in person before so we thought this a perfect opportunity.
Plus, a video by our friend, Jordan Kim, was screening, and he was attending, so we wanted to say hi.
PLUS, some illustrations of ours will be in an exhibition next month as part of a Pictoplasma group show in Paris at La Gaîté Lyrique. But more on that later!

先月のロスに引き続き、今度は11/1~11/6の間NYCを訪れてきました。今年の秋冬は移動しています。NYCに来たのは半年ぶりくらい。でも前回は日帰りかなにかでほとんど時間がなかったので今回は比較的長めの滞在です。

まずは、いままで「Bryum & Kapok」「BLESS」の映像２作品で参加したベルリンのピクトプラズマ主催のイベントPictoplasmaNYC。ベルリンからこのために来たピクトプラズマのラースとピーター、私達の作品をドイツで紹介してくれた二人にやっと会う事ができました。来月パリの La Gaîté Lyriqueで開催されるPictoplasma Parisでのグループ展"POST DIGITAL MONSTERS"に参加するので（そうなんです！）その事について少し話しました。
そして、LAで仲良くなったJordan Kimの作品が今年の上映プログラム入りしてたので彼も忙しい中NYを訪れていて再会。
前回記事のLA同様、今回もいくつかの写真を載せてみようと思います。

Here is a very tiny photo of Peter and Lars (on the far left, respectively), talking with two of the conference speakers, Ben and Julia. These talks were some of the most interesting parts of the trip for us. Some gave really good advice, some presented fresh perspectives and explained personal philosophies. And some talks were not very good at all. But all were extremely educational for us and we ate them up.

Here is a photo of the presentation of Keepon by BeatBots, Marek Michalowski and Hideki Kozima. This was easily the most interesting and meaningful presentation for us. There were certainly more interesting designs and practical (career-wise) presentations, but the philosophy behind Keepon and the goals and achievements discussed were just amazing.
They began by discussing what robots, and in turn, characters, can achieve that humans cannot. From this question they talked about the minimalism in character and robot design and how this stripped down form of communication can actually communicate more effectively in many situations than humans. Their example was an incredibly moving story about a young girl with autism who bonded with one of the Keepon robots and even became able to speak as a result.

会場ではkeepon／キーポンを開発したBeatBotsのMarek Michalowskiと小嶋秀樹さんのトークもありました。とても面白い内容で、スピーチ終了後にもすこしお話しする事ができました。お二人の”キーポンがこの世界でできる事”に対するお話が私達二人の作品の制作の仕方、世界の考え方といろいろと比べてとても参考＆刺激になる時間でした。

The evening before the conference and screenings started there was tarot reading at the White Rabbit bar using the Pictoplasma PicTarot deck. Lars did a reading for each of us and we got into some deep waters, drifting into the potentials of our futures, the reflections of characters and the faces behind the masks.
It was really one of the highlights of our trip! Blurry photos below.

このカード、本来のカードにない「ART」「LUST」などあって解釈なども面白く、大アルカナの全てが違うキャラクターで表現されてて面白いです。

And of course we visited a bunch of museums and galleries! This here is the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. We sort of stumbled on it after we visited the Occupy Wall Street efforts, but it is highly recommended! Lot's of great masks and objects and patterns! (Plus it's free)

もちろん今回もいろんな美術館に立ち寄ってきました！チャイナタウンの近くに滞在してたので、川ぞいを歩いてて見つけたスミソニアン国立アメリカン・インディアン博物館に立ち寄りました。

Occupy Wall Street endeavors look to be going quite strong! There was some nice free screen printing going on and a lot of people showing support or general curiosity.

アートブースでは、Tシャツのスクリーンプリント隊が人々のTシャツをどんどんプリントしています。

And then we also checked out the New Museum with our old friend CJ (makes awesome type and design as Copter Design) and some of his pals. Right now is a show by Carsten Höller called Experience. The exhibition is focused on experience and almost all of the installations are somehow physically involved. Even the occular-based installations, like birds in a cage-mobile or neon-colored animal statues under ever changing florescent lights could be yet affected by signing a waiver in the lobby and picking up a set of goggles that turn everything upside down. Of course, the highlight of this exhibition (for me, anyway) was the giant slide that began on the fourth floor and ended on the second.

また別の日、ニューミュージアムで開催されていて２階ぶち抜きの滑り台で話題のCarsten Höller: Experience。入場無料になる木曜の夜に友人のCJ（Copter Design）行ってみました。

降りた先の２階。ストロボが焚かれていて、人が結構な勢いで滑り降りてきます。そこからまた展示の続きを見るのです。

And we also attended this: Maurizio Cattelan's All show at the Guggenheim. All of his work suspended from the ceiling, allowing visitors to view everything from all angles and be generally overwhelmed and in awe. Our old old friend (from highschool!) Joe (a fine fine artist) took us on the special opening night.

グッゲンハイム美術館で４日からスタートしたばかりのマウリツィオ・カテランの回顧展「Maurizio Cattelan: All」。今までの作品全部宙づりでした。

We saw a number of other exhibitions (Alison Shulnik's, show at the ZeiherSmith gallery was particularly moving and inspirational!) but really it was about the awesome Pictoplasma event. Hopefully we'll screen at the Berlin festival again in the future and maybe even do a talk some time? We have philosophies and ideas too!

L.A. Tabi　10/12〜10/19

Mega entry!!!
We don't usually post such lengthy entries, especially when it has nothing to do with what we are working on - but our trip to LA last week was such a good time and we got to meet with so many great people we thought we'd lay it all out here anyway.

10/12〜10/19の約一週間の間、飛行機で６時間程離れたLAに行って、Overtureに縁のある人にたくさん会ってきました。
ちなみにロスも西海岸も私（アヤ）は全く初めての経験です。（ジェイソンは子供の頃に行った事があるそうだけどほとんど覚えてない）が、実はロスにいる人とのコラボが今までにけっこうあるのです。今回はお世話になった人達にまとめて会えるとてもいいチャンスでした。
写真と一緒にいくつかの思い出を紹介しますね。

Our first stop, not an hour after landing among the succulents and sunshine, was the Yo Gabba Gabba set and offices. We did a short animation, Animal Sounds, for them a few years ago and managed to keep in touch enough for a tour of where the magic is made. Our friend (and talented director), Jordan Kim walked us around and wowed us with the various departments.

到着してすぐに向かったのが以前アニメーション「Animal Sounds」で参加した、米子供番組「Yo Gabba Gabba!」の撮影現場です。
ダウニースタジオズという大きなスタジオがいくつも建ち並ぶ内のひとつで、ちょうどシーズン４（？）の撮影最終日のランチタイムにお邪魔してケータリングの食事をいただいたり、ここで働いている、友人＆才能あるディレクターのJordan Kimの案内でスタジオ内を見学させてもらったりして貴重な時間を過ごしました。

We are always on the lookout for sweet cafes and bookstores and Stories, in Echo Park, is both, with a small but choice selection of used books, nice coffee (free-refills) and giant fig newtons.

店内の様子です。ここではコーヒーといちじくのお菓子を外の席でいただきました。途中で店内の席にもどっておかわりをもらいました。（２杯まではタダかも？）

Next door is The Echo Park Time Travel Mart the front store supporting 826LA, a non-profit tutoring kids in writing and other activities. All the proceeds from the store, which stocks all sorts of time travel related goods, from dinosaur eggs to anti-robot fluid, go to the tutoring program.

カフェの隣にあるお店、これが面白いお店でした。Echo Park Time Travel Martという名前で、地域に暮らす6~18歳の子供達に文章の書き方のワークショップをしたり宿題を手伝ったりして放課後の勉強＆クリエイトの場を提供するNPO、826LAのサポートをするお店です。

このお店のテーマは”タイムトラベル”。　原始人とロボットが出会う瞬間が、歩道向けのディスプレイです。店内もタイムトラベルにまつわるとんちの効いた品でいっぱいです。

このお店の奥の作業スペースで子供達が作った詩集やジンがこの表の店内で売られていて、ここでの売上げは826LAの活動資金になるそうです。
こういう子供のためのNPO活動＆店舗はそれぞれに違うテーマで現在８店舗ほどあるようです。こういうの日本でもやってほしい。

We didn't get to many museums during this trip unfortunately, but we did manage to fit in LACMA, specifically checking out the Japanese Pavilion and Islamic and Asian sections. There is too much to cover in a day, let alone a single evening, so we absorbed and were awed by what we had time for, then moved on (to dinner).

(Doguu statue, incredibly old, I never really expected to see one in person, so it was a wonderful surprise!)

土偶の他に埴輪、土器もありました。

(The museum also has an amazing collection of 800 plus Netsuke, which they rotate month-to-month. The detail on these tiny, keychain-like carvings is beyond skilled. Each little creature or character is one breath from being alive.)

根付展示のための部屋があり、ここでは800以上のコレクションの中から数ヶ月ごとに入れ替えて150ほど展示に出してるそうです。私達の行った日は動物系が多かったです。

Of course there are many farmers markets in LA, we only went to one, but it was enormous and filled with the variety that only access to different environments can provide. I think? Maybe I'm just not familiar with these larger famers market. Anyway, it was great.

On the 15th we attended the dublab 12-year anniversary event at Atwater Crossing. It was a very big event with live acts, screenings and djs. There were also food trucks, a screen printing space, popcorn, a bar, and a photographer doing portraits or something. It was a busy place!
Among the events was a short screening of the Film Flash videos, with our Mushroom Hunting animation included.

10/15 dublab DUBLAB 12-YEAR ANNIVERSARY HAPPENING

会場はatwater crossing。とても広くてきれいなところでした。会場は大きく３つに分かれて、外に屋台村、自転車専用のValet（ホテルのように専門のスタッフが自転車を預かって駐輪場に）サービスもありました。

HIT+RUNの無料スクリーンプリントサービス。持参のTシャツか会場で2Kから寄付されたTシャツを５ドル（安い！）で購入し、数種類の柄から３つまで選んで目の前でプリントしてくれます。私達もやってもらいました。

DJフロスティはラジオの印象のままの優しくもバイタリティ旺盛な人で、次にロスを訪ねた時はdublabオフィスを訪ねる約束をして別れました。

Years after working with Poketo, we finally got a chance to meet Ted and Angie and visit their studio! They were great and we talked for some length about camping and hot springs over Japanese curry.

2007年にTシャツをデザイン（現在は売り切れです）した縁で知り合った、POKETOのオフィスにもやっと顔を出す事ができました。長かった！

テッドとアンジー。一緒にカレー屋さんへお昼ごはんを食べに行って、このへんのおすすめをいろいろと聞きました。なんて可愛らしい二人！

We had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio en route to lunch with Kevin Sukho Lee. They were setting up for Halloween and every hallway looked like it was under construction with black tarp and plastic sheeting strung up everywhere and pvc piping poking out between the seams.

Nickelodeonのアニメーションスタジオを訪ねて、アニメーションデパートメントのディレクターKevin Sukho Leeと一緒にランチを食べながらいろいろ話しました。彼とはYo Gabba Gabba!からのご縁で、POKETOの二人と同じく、本物にやっと会えたな〜という感じでした。

ビルの中ではもうハロウィーンの飾り付けが始まっていました。アニメーションチームごとに出来映えを争っているようです。当たり前だけど、どこもかしこも絵のうまい人だらけ！

And we also had a visit to the Cartoon Network Animation Studio. No Halloween prepping here, just hard work and some solid counseling for us! Along those lines, anyway. It was good experience and we had a lot of fun and learned a lot!

And I guess that can be said for the trip in general: more than anything else we learned A LOT. We spend most of our time just make make making and have no idea how to have that lead to anything but the finished piece itself. So we are trying to learn how to go beyond that... and this trip was a step in doing just that!

また別の日にはカートゥーンネットワークのオフィスへ。ここでもいろんなお話を聞かせてもらいました。この町でオリジナルの作品を全て手がけて作れる人はとても目立つので（普通はコンセプト／ストーリー／デザイン／制作など分業制）二人のような作品は珍しいよと言われました。

毎日のただひたすらの制作から少しだけ離れて（今はもう復帰してます！）、ずっと会えなかった人たちを訪ねたロスへの旅、結果からいうととっても良い時間でした。
ロスという場所は自分の人生に最も縁のない場所かと思ってたけど、旧縁をつなぎなおしたり、新しい縁を結んだり、たくさんの面白い出来事に巻き込まれて帰ってきました。
またいつか訪ねる日を楽しみにしています。

Mushroom Hunting dublab Film Flash

Here's a very short animation we created recently for dublab! It is part of their Film Flash, a series of promos created by a number of artists for their 12th anniversary. The short promos will be officially premiered this weeked (10/15) at their 12th anniversary celebration.
The films are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 License which means folks can remix and share them to their liking (with credit).

Our film is extremely simple and short and took us about 10 days to create (background elements we luckily already had). It is about four friends out wild mushroom hunting. They are very special little guys to us. We first conceived of them for Ludic Chase, so please keep them in mind when it is finally released!

(Aside from the field recording we did, the music is by Andrew Pekler taken from his track "Exotic 1" on the Creative Commons licensed dublab sample compilation "Bonus Beat Blast".)

これはLAのネットラジオ局dublabの１２周年記念のために作ったプロモビデオで、明日１０月１５日にLAで開催される 12周年記念イベントの中のFilm Flashというプログラムで公式にプレミア上映される予定のものです。
Film Flashには、他にも Spencer Ockwellなどdublabにゆかりのあるアーティストが参加しています。
このビデオはクリエイティブ・コモンズ・ライセンス 3.0の下で公開＆配布されています。（Attribution-Noncommercial（帰属ー非営利）　
そして明日、私たちもその記念イベントに参加します！（今LAに来ています）楽しみ！

このビデオは、森の中できのこ狩りをする４人の友達の小さなお話です。
この４人はそれぞれにモデルがいて、今製作中のビデオ Ludic Chaseにもほんの少しだけ出演する予定です。同じ森の違う場所、違う時間のもうひとつの出来事です。

August 29th was Overture's 7 year anniversary! We're still working on this animation so there wasn't much elaborate celebrating... but we did want to reveal the title of the animation to mark the occasion and decided to do it in the form of a very brief trailer.
And in case the handwritten lettering was illegible for you, here is the title in simple text:

Ludic Chase

We won't get into the reasons behind the title before the animation is out in the world. Maybe later.

Not much happens in the trailer really, but we thought it might prepare you a bit for the kind atmosphere to expect. A forest at dusk. A narrow path. A firefly.

Also, the music is by rec.tangle, taken from the very song we are using in Ludic Chase!

夏ももう終わりですね。

This is the last weekend for the summer tshirt event at Kichimu! After this weekend the shirts we designed will still be available at Tone, the clothing and accessories store connected with the gallery Stone (Tone is also in Kichijoji. Find directions here).

先週にもお伝えした,２週連続で週末に開催されているキチムのTシャツ受注会、今週末が最後ですー！お時間のある方はぜひ行ってみてくださいね。

終了後、この受注会の会場のギャラリーSTONEの姉妹服屋さん、TONE（このお店も吉祥寺にあります詳しくはこちらへ）にてTシャツが販売される予定がありますので、詳しい事がわかりしだいまたここでお伝えします。

最近は本当にアニメーションにはまりきっていたので、こういう事ができる事で腕や脳も喜んでいます。

Nook Notes: Entry 07

This Nook Notes is short and sweet. At the end of July we went on a camping trip with my sister, Sara and her husband, Frank, and while we spent most of the time swimming and exploring we also managed to squeeze some work in.
The waterside location was nearly identical to what we have in mind for our animation's setting and we were able channel some of this visual information down onto paper. We are in the middle of creating color panels and backgrounds for the animation anyway, so it was excellent timing.

We also managed to catch a bit of communication between two spiders!

７月に始まった合宿。いつものごとく朝から晩まで土日もなく作業作業の日々。まだまだ作業は続くので、７月末に区切りをつけて息抜きするためキャンプへ行ってきました。
今回のNOOK NOTESはこのキャンプのことを短い映像にしたものです。

行った先はマサチューセッツ州内のTully lakeという湖に面したキャンプ場。
同行のジェイソン姉Saraと旦那さんのFrankと一緒に、携帯とネットから離れてカヤック＆スイミング＆ハイキング＆満天の星をいっぱい楽しんできました。

このタイミングでキャンプに行きたかったのはもうひとつ理由があって、今制作中のアニメーションの色付けに使う水彩ベースの制作と資料写真＆ビデオ収集です。これも、よいものが描けたし撮れました。

沿岸の浸食を押さえるために生やしてるブルーベリーが食べ放題で、毎朝とって食べてました。一石二鳥！

自然の中に何日もいると、自分が大きくなったような感じがするのが面白いですね。なんか体のキャパシティを超えて膨らんでるような感じで。自分が自分だと認識してる範囲が、壁が溶けて広がってるような。

Salt Lake City Film Festival 2011

BLESS and Bryum and Kapok will be screening at this year's Salt Lake City Film Festival!
The festival is from August 18th to 21st, with BLESS screening on the 19th and Bryum and Kapok screening on the 21st.
Because our animations are shorts they are being paired with feature length films at each screening which should be interesting!

Kichimu Summer Tshirts! / キチムでTシャツ！

夏真っ盛りですねー。

制作合宿で深海生物のように籠りきっている私たち…あぶくだけが水面にボコボコと浮かんできて、あ、生きてるな！と地上の人たちもひと安心…
ある日そこに一通の手紙が、ガラス瓶にはいって海の底まで落ちてきました。
なになにと読んでみると、なにやら楽しそうなお誘い。地上では汗かきの人たちのために、Tシャツがもっともっと必要なんだとか…
というわけで、来月こういう催しに参加します！

”汗っかき！夏のTシャツ受注会＠キチム”！！

日程は８月の12,13,14と、19.20,21。どちらも金土日の週末３日間です。

場所は吉祥寺キチム内ギャラリー STONE。
Overtureで"Moon Hare"の展示やStorytellersをやったあのギャラリーです。

私達の他には、第一回ほぼ日作品大賞のsunuiさん、Spoken Words Projectさん、Toraneko bonbonさん, anuenueさん, Jubileeさん, Boojilさん, 扇谷一穂さん他と、キチム＆STONEにゆかりのある人達が参加します。なんて面白そうな企画！

この企画のための新作Tシャツ、今、絵描いてます。お楽しみに！

Far away in our Summer Camp it is a wonderful surprise to be contacted by the outside world. This happened the other day when we received an email from the gallery STONE to come up with a tshirt design or two for an upcoming showcase/launch:

"Sweaty! Summer Tshirts Launch at Kichimu"!

We had an exhibition and a Storytellers performance with Toyama Takeo last summer at STONE, located in Kichijoji's Kichimu, and it is our great pleasure to work with them again!
Plus, the other folks involved in the show make some truly amazing stuff. Spoken Words Project, Sunui, Toraneko bonbon, anuenue, Jubilee, Boojil, Kazuho Oogiya, among others will be designing shirts along with us!

Summers in Japan are super hot and heavy with humidity and this Tshirt launch will hopefully help to alleviate the sweaty oppression and lift spirits! We are doing our best to come up with some refreshing and ridiculous designs!

The tshirts will be on display on the following dates: 8/12, 8/13, 8/14, 8/19, 8/20, 8/21 and available for purchase or order during these times or anytime afterwards.

Secret Summer Camp

Here we are now. In an in-between state not unlike last Summer. We are working in our own Secret Summer Camp completing the ongoing animation and beating the heat with swimming and naps on carpeted concrete floors. Long hours and fresh vegetables are our rewards. And the end of the animation is near!
This weekend we will take a break from drawing and editing to camp and paint. The painting is for the animation and will hopefully result in new Nook Notes.

７月も半ば…
去年のいまごろは、私達二人が日本に到着して一週間すぎたくらいで、これからはじまる冒険にワクワクしつつも制作スタート＆展示準備など慌ただしく過ごしてた頃だと思います。

今年の夏、Overtureは新作アニメーション＆その他の制作合宿に入っています。
７月に入ってから毎日、朝お弁当を作って、朝のコーヒーを買ってくる日はあったりなかったり。
スタジオについたら、背筋のばして、エアコンはなく小さなファンひとつだけなので、あまりにも暑いときは少しだけ床で昼寝したりしながら夜１１時頃まで制作です。
そういえば、mumのビデオもHauschkaのビデオのときもこんな感じだったな…(BLESSは冬でした)と思い出しながら作っています。

今週末は制作をちょっと休んで近場にキャンプへ。森と池（湖？）の近くで炎を見つめてきます。アニメーションのための背景の絵作りもできたらいいな…それで次のNOOK NOTESもできるかもです。

BLESS at MIAF

急な話で来週になるんですが、オーストラリア・メルボルンで開催される国際アニメーション映画祭　Melbourne International Animation FestivalのMusic Videoプログラムにて「BLESS」が上映されることになりました！
上映されるのは22日水曜日、夕方６時半からです。

Sesame Print

The illustration we did for Perfect Wave magazine that came out in January this year is now available as a print! Digital print on archival paper or archival print on stretched canvas from 10" x 3" up to 40" x 10".
As previously mentioned, the left and right side of the illustration connect and loop in the digital magazine, but if you buy the print you can wrap it around your head and view the cafe interior in immersive 360 degrees!

The illustration is of the cafe, Sesame, the central location of a story and world we have been creating and thinking about since nearly our start. The main characters, Chim and Harold, are present in the illustration, Chim working at the bar and Harold performing on the little stage. Our goal is to create a feature length animation of their story, as well as an album comic. And more illustrations, certainly!

今年の１月にリリースされたPerfectwave magazine #1 のために制作した、横にながーーーいイラストレーションが、Sosiety6でプリントで購入できるようになりました！サイズもいろいろと揃っています。

以前も紹介の時に書いたと思いますが、このイラストは最初と最後がループで繋がるようになってます。Perfect magazineではループになるようにしてくれたので、まだ見た事ない人はぜひチェックしてグルグルしてみてください。

…で、このプリントなんですが　これは紙なので自然にループしたりはしません。
なのでぜひ自分の手で頭の回りにぐるっと一周させて店内にいる気分を楽しんでください。（私達も原画でやりました。結構楽しいです）

イラストについて：ここはセサミというカフェ。
たくさんの人が集うこの場所は、私達が一緒に活動を始めた頃から考え続けているある物語の中の大切な、何度も出てくるであろう場所です。チムとハロルドがこの物語をひっぱっていく２人のキャラクター。チムはカウンターの中で働いていて、頭から出る煙が店の中で広がっています。ハロルドは店内にある小さなステージでパフォーマンス中。

有機体のように私達の人生のリアルな要素を飲み込みながら成長しているこの物語、いつか長い映像を作りたいと思っています。そして”アルバム”形式のコミックも作りたい！
それまでの間にもっと沢山のこの世界に関するイラストレーションを作ると思います。

Nook Notes: Entry 06

A new Nook Notes! Over the winter we made two different sets of ceramic pendants for the upcoming animation. This Nook Notes takes a look at the creation process and the finished product!
The pendants are for sale by request at the moment. We'll also be selling them anywhere we end up screening the animation in person and also possibly online at some point.
The music, as with the previous videos, is rec.tangle, the artist responsible for the music in the animation!

久しぶりのNOOK NOTESです
冬の間、私達は新作映像のための新たな２種類の陶製ペンダントを制作していました。今回のNOOK NOTESではその模様を少しだけお見せしたいと思います。
この新しいペンダントの形が何なのか…今は秘密にしておきますね。映像の物語と関係ある物です。
そして最後の方には完成して３つ（２つの新作＋BLESSの”紫の山”）そろった様子を！

100 Video Artists In Our Hands

The 100 Japanese video artist book we mentioned arrived yesterday and sure enough! We are in there as well.
It is a beautiful book (though a little pricey at 3800 yen) and would be a great resource for someone looking for video artists to contract. There doesn't seem to be anyone in this book who isn't incredibly talented in some aspect of video production. Some folks are technically savvy while others, like Onnacodomo, use simple techniques for playful and colorful results.
Every artist represented has a two page spread with stills of past work, a short bio in Japanese and English and contact information.

BLESS at Stuttgart

International Trickfilm Festival Stuttgart! 2011! We were invited to screen Bless at this year's festival! Which is very lucky considering we completely forgot to submit.
Bless will be screening as part of the Animated Music Videos section on May 5th at Metropol 1. We will be alongside a great selection of amazing music videos (recent Blockhead video, Gorillaz video, etc.)! This really is a great honor.

ビデオBLESSが、ドイツのシュトゥットガルト国際アニメーション映画祭にて招待上映される事になりました！
この映画祭は、毎年５月に開催されるドイツ最大のアニメーション映画祭で、国際アニメーションフィルム協会(ASIFA)公認＆アカデミー賞公認の映画祭です。

上映されるのは5/3ー8の会期中の5/5。

この映画祭のアートディレクターUli Wegenastによって選ばれた、”昨年のベスト＆最もオリジナルなアニメイテッドミュージックビデオ”の２１の作品の中には、アニメーションが話題になった最新のBlockheadのビデオや、Gorillazのビデオなどなど…。その中にBLESSも仲間入りさせてもらっています。

Friday Night: Benefit Success & The Caldron

Here are some photos of the Huge Love for Japan: A Benefit set up. We neglected to take any photos after the event actually started, but rest assured it was a success! $600 was raised for the World Vets Japan Animal Disaster Relief Fund!
We screened some animations, people read poems, did some comedy, played some music, sold some vegan baked goods, held an art raffle and generally did their best for a very good cause. We are very grateful to have been a part of this benefit!

昨日開催された被災地の動物のためのベネフィット、Huge Love for Japan: A Benefitに行ってきました。
このイベントを企画してくれたキャロリンによると、一晩で６００ドルが集まったそうです！このお金は全てWorld Vets(世界獣医協会)の特別支援プログラムWorld Vets Japan Animal Disaster Relief Fundに送金されます。

イベントでは、詩のリーディングや小話、ライブなどの他、ビーガンフードの販売やアート作品のくじ引きなどもありました。
私達はいくつかの映像作品を上映させてもらいました。今回は音楽もビデオのオリジナルのものを流したのでより世界に入ってみてもらえたかなと思います。
写真はいつも通り（笑）準備中のものしかないんですが、元レコード屋さんのあった、とても広くてきれいな空間にたくさんの人が集まってくれました。

他の日にも、私達が普段買い物しているCo-op（生協）の入り口で地元Greenfieldの子供達がドラムチームを作って演奏してて、なんだろうと思って見てみると日本の震災支援のお金作りのための募金活動だったり、ほんとうにいたる所でベネフィットのためのイベントや街頭募金などがされています。
ありがたい。と思いながら、私達にここでできる事は他にはなんだろう、短期的＆長期的に見てもっと他にできる事がきっとあるだろうと日々考えながら動くという感じです。

But before we went down to Northampton we sped up to Bellows Falls, VT for our close friend, Ryan's exhibition, The Caldron, opening. The space, 7sq Gallery at the Works on Paper preservation studio is very nice and the town, which we'd never been to before, is really lovely, with a cute little downtown and an opera house too!
Most of the work Ryan had up we had only seen on his website so it was really wonderful to see them at their full size. The impression some of this new work leaves really needs to be experienced in person for full effect. A lot of mesmerizing and disconnecting moments to be had.

そのアニマルベネフィットのイベントの前に駆け足で見てきた友人ライアンの個展、”The Caldron”のオープニング。バーモント州Bellows Fallsという所にあるスタジオWorks on Paper内のギャラリー7sq Galleryに行ってきました。

このBellows Fallsという町、二人とも初めて行く町だったのですがなんだかいい感じに小さくて、でもいろいろ詰まってて（小さなオペラハウスもあって！）とても素敵な町でした。短い間しかいられなかったのが残念。個展開催中にもう一回くらい行けるといいな…。

一緒に音楽したり、ドローイングしたり、カップルぐるみでつきあってるライアンですが、彼の作品を生でいっぺんに見たのはこれがはじめて。なんだか誇らしい気持ちで会場をうろうろしました。

Animal Benefit: Huge Love for Japan

We were invited to be a part of another benefit for Japan, this time raising money for World Vets Japan Animal Disaster Relief Fund.
Pets!

We'll be screening some of our animations again, although with the original music this round.

The event will take place in Northampton, MA in the basement of Thorne's Market where Dynamite record store used to be. It is sponsored by C3, a "creative community collective" in the area.
Starts around 8, various acts, $5-10 recommended donation, should be good! Come if you can!

先月のRelief for Japanに続いて声をかけてもらい、もうひとつのベネフィット企画”Animal Benefit: Huge Love for Japan”に参加させてもらう事になりました。

今回は、ノースダコタに本拠地を持つNPO団体World Vets Japan Animal Disaster Relief Fundという所を通して、震災にあった動物達のケアのための資金を募ります。
企画はC3（クリエイティブ・コミュニティ・コレクティブ）。

私達は映像作品（今回はオリジナル音とともに）を数本上映する予定です。

JAPANESE MOTION GRAPHIC CREATORS 2011 ／映像作家 100人 2011

There is a book coming out April 25th in Japan called, JAPANESE MOTION GRAPHIC CREATORS 2011. It lists the top 100 video artists in Japan with information and some stills from each artist's body of work.
Overture was selected as one of these top 100!
I'm not completely sure what the qualifying merits of the 100 are, but it is put together by a company called BNN, a publishing company in Japan and it looks like they have put this book together for a number of years. They publish, for example, the magazine Quotation that had a write up about us last year.
Needless to say, we are extremely honored!
We will write more on this when our copy arrives!

”映像作家クリエイティブファイル”ページに、057／オーバーチュアとして紹介され、付属DVDにも短いショウリールが収録される予定です。

映像を作っていて、このような年鑑に自分たちのことが収録されるのはとてもうれしいことです。声をかけていただいてありがとうございました!

Citrus Cel Animation Film Festival

Here's another festival: we were invited to screen BLESS at this year's Citrus Cel Animation Film Festival in Jacksonville, Florida! The festival runs from April 8-10 and BLESS is part of the Music Videos section screening on the 9th from 6:00.

4/8〜10の間、フロリダのJacksonvilleで開催される映画祭 Citrus Cel Animation Film Festivalにて「BLESS」が上映される事になりました。

Oh! So, the Relief for Japan benefit concert went quite well! They ended up donating to Direct Relief International.

Below are some photos from the night. There are a couple of photos of Yume playing music while our animations screened, which worked out nicely especially since we have some previous experience.

先日（3/23）、オーガナイザーのジョセフの企画で開催された「Relief for Japan」の模様です。

カナダ・モントリオールからこのために来た友人、シド（Yume／下写真・ジェイソン＆アヤの間）の演奏中に、映像を流させてもらいました。
他の演奏も皆素敵でした。
話を聞いてみると、自分は日本に滞在したことがあるとか、自分の従兄弟は日本名を持ってる日米ハーフなんだとか教えてくれて、みなそれぞれに日本との繋がりがある人達で、なんというか、世界は本当に狭いんだなと思いました。

ここで集まった500ドルは、ジョセフが責任を持ってDirect Relief Internationalに寄付いたしました。
会場であった人に聞いた所、４月にもこのあたりで別のベネフィットのイベントが企画されているそうです。そのイベントにも、時間がゆるす限り参加したいと思っています。

みんなどうもありがとう。

XIII MECAL INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL OF BARCELONA 2011

FROM 8 TO 17 OF APRIL

So! There's the fundraiser tomorrow night! And the animation we're still working hard on. But we're still keeping busy with festivals as well!
A while ago the folks from the Mecal International Film Festival invited us to screen Bless as part of the Music Video section of this year's festival.
We agreed!
The festival is from the 8th to 17th of April and takes place at a number of locations across Barcelona, Spain. The festival has a really great lineup, we are very grateful to screen, especially in our category, with so many fantastic directors (Spike Jonze, Eric Wareheim and many others!).

短編映画祭、MECAL Short Film Festival at Barcelona 2011内のMusicVideoプログラムにて、「BLESS」が上映されます。

会場は、バルセロナ市内のCINES MALDÀ、LOUNGE CLUB MAU MAU、MACBA、
INSTITUT FRANCÈSの４ヶ所です。（私達の上映がどこかは今の所不明ですが…）

スペインでの上映は、初かも…
スペイン繋がりで言えば、以前Playgroundという音楽情報サイトで私達のピックアップした映像のVideomixを取り上げてもらった事がありますね。。

新作が完成するまでの間、BLESSをはじめとした今までの作品にがんばってもらっています。早く完成させたいな。

Relief for Japan

We were asked to screen some of our animations and design the flyer for this benefit concert next Wednesday (3/23/11). It is a good cause that is close to our hearts so we are happy to participate!
We don't know much about the musicians but they seem to be quite popular! Death Vessel releases on SubPop and toured with Jonsi (Sigur Ros) recently. And Winterpills are very popular locally I think!
It should be great! Plus Yume is our friend Sid and I think we'll be screening animation with his music - it should be interesting!
As the flyer states it starts at 10 (opens around 9:30?) and is at the Elevens in Northampton, MA (venue name linked to their site for directions, etc.)

Since last Friday we have deeply been wanting to do something in regards to the crisis in Japan. Day and night we have watched the NHK 24 hour news on USTREAM and been in contact with friends and family there. It has been nerve-racking and we have felt very helpless. However small, this is one step in the right direction. We are grateful to Amazing Love (Joseph) for thinking of us to participate!

この数日間のあいだに日本の各地で起こった出来事…。
こんなに遠くはなれた場所で何もできずに、でも情報だけはかき集めようとNHKのUSTREAMをただ見続けていました。
震災直後から、たくさんの米国の人が私達に心配や気遣いの言葉をかけてくれています。もう何年も連絡を取ってなかったような人も含めて、本当にたくさんの人達です。

このイベントを企画してくれたJosephもその一人です。

彼は、KiraKiraのUSツアーのオーガナイザーをしていた時に出会い、今回いち早く日本の支援金を集めるためのイベントに声をかけてくれました。
ほんとうにありがたいし、うれしい。
私達はフライヤーのデザインと、当日映像の上映をする予定です。

出演者は、Death Vessel（SubPop所属。最近Sigur RosのJonsiのUSツアーに同行）、この辺りではとても有名なバンドWinterpillsをはじめたとした人達です。
私達の映像は、友人のYumeの演奏時に流す事になると思います。
会場はここから車で30分くらいのNorthamptonという町。以前私達もライブした事のあるElevensというところです。

LAの先進的ネットラジオ局、 dublab(ダブラブ)が2/20に主催する映像イベント、Labrat Matinee #9でOvertureが参加します！
dublabは、日本でもただ素敵な選曲をするラジオ局としてだけではなく、Into infinityというユニークなプロジェクトなどでも知られてる非営利のラジオ局で、私達も普段作業中などによく聴いてます。
何時も面白そう＋意義のある事をどんどん進めて実現している人達なので、いつか何か一緒にしたいものだと思ってました。なので今回このお話が来て本当に嬉しいです。

Peskeomskut Noisecapades Inaugural

From our bedroom we can look out over the Connecticut River and the Great Falls, the place where our village, Turners Falls, took its name in a massive Native American massacre not so very long ago. Today we took part in an event on the ice below the dam, between the land and the small island, Peskeomskut, standing in the Connecticut at the base of the Great Falls. The event was called Peskeomskut Noisecapades Inaugural and tens of musicians and performance artists and visual artists took part in this chaotic, snowy mess as snow and sleet and rain attacked from the sky.
There were noisy pieces and beautiful pieces, quiet pieces and absolutely disorienting pieces. We presented and did a reading of our short MoonHare story, just before the weather started to get wet.
Neil Young, making music under the name Bromp Treb, playing in the band Fat Worm of Error, running the Yeay! record label and organizer of the late Montague Phantom Brain Exchange put the event together and it was a true wonder what an amazing group he was able to pull together. It was a great honor to be a part of such a fantastic happening!

私達の住んでるTuners Fallsという小さな町を囲む様に流れているコネチカット川。
その川に隣接する水力発電のダムがある建物から、川の浅い部分へ歩いて降りて行く事ができます。
立春過ぎたとは言え、今年何度も吹雪に見舞われて積もった雪と、氷に閉ざされたこの場所に降りて行く人はこの季節ほとんどいません。ですが、今日は違いました！
凍った川の中程にある小島と岸辺の間のスペースで開かれたイベント、Peskeomskut Noisecapades Inaugural！
一番寒く、連日の雪嵐で身動きも取れないこの時期に「おもしろきこともなき世をおもしろく」の精神を持つノイズミュージシャンと、パフォーマーと詩人と、アーティストが集って持ち時間５分で出し物をするイベントです。
たくさんの人が雪と、氷雨と雹（！）の中集まり、それぞれのパフォーマンスを観たり、参加したり、楽しみました。
私達は卯年にちなんでMoonHareのストーリーテリングを。ムーンへア展示の絵を紙芝居の様にして朗読しました。
蛍光色のつなぎでただ映像を撮るパフォーマンスをしてる人（カメラのレンズは塗りつぶされてて撮れない）、詩人＆バンジョー奏者、椅子と自分を紐でつないで演説するサラリーマン、ラッパー＋アコーディオン奏者＋トランペット奏者の３人組、トナカイの面をかぶった森の人（from ナウシカ）のような人、テントの中から歌い続ける子供達の集団、落ちてくる雹にギターを演奏させる人、スノーシューで遠距離から走ってドラムセットにジャンプして演奏するドラマーなどなど…まさにカオスな空間でした。
観てて思ったのは、この辺、変な人だらけだ！という驚きと嬉しさ。
もの凄い悪天候の中、みんながガタガタ震えながらもニヤニヤしてたのが忘れられません。

このイベントを主催したニールヤング（通称）は、伝説のイベントMontague Phantom Brain Exchangeのオーガナイザーで私達の作品を上映してくれたり、Bromp Treb名義で音楽作ったり、Fat Worm of Errorというバンドのメンバーでベルギーに行ったり全米ツアーしたり、Yeay!というレコードレーベルのオーナーでもあるほんっとうに多彩でエネルギッシュな人です。（今の家を紹介してくれたのもニール夫妻！もうお世話になりっぱなし！）
彼の人望があるからこそ、こんなに沢山の人が機材を持って雪と雨の中駆けつけたんだと思います。素晴らしい！

Nook Notes: Entry 05

We are deep in the middle of the animation these days resulting in very little activity here on the blog and anywhere else in our lives. Whenever we do take a break, however, we like to get into some serious horseplay.

Today we come with our fifth Nook Notes entry and our third video in the series describing just that: some of the nonsense we enjoy. Mostly it is us playing with paper cutout stick puppets.

We made some paper cutout puppets of Gunnar and Oyami and use them in the video to briefly describe some of their relationship.

Mixed in is some footage of another pastime we enjoy this time of year: snowshoeing. Specifically, in this instance, a recent hike we made at Barton's Cove with our family.

Considering the nature of both parts of the video and the season we have titled this entry, "Winter Games".

The music once again is Rec.Tangle, more from the set of sketches he created for us.

アニメーション制作が続いています。
今年の冬は雪がたくさん降ったので（これからまださらに降る様子）私達の家に籠っているのを応援してくれてるような…そうでもないような…。まだ制作は始まったばかりです。

日々制作、窓から外を覗くと一面雪という代わり映えのしない日々、それでも何か息抜きは必要です…

というわけで、今回のNOOK NOTES#5 ”WInter Games ”は前回に続き映像もの。
紙で作ったグンナルとオヤミちゃんで、ちょっと遊んでみたときのものです。
今回のビデオの中での、二人の関係がどんなものか、少し見てもらえます。
この方法で次のビデオを作っても面白かったかも…そのアイデアもまたいつか。

間に入っているのは、雪の積もったBarton's Coveにスノーシューを履いて遊びに行ったときの映像です。以前のBarton's Coveの映像と全然違いますね！（ちなみに、今はもっと雪が積もっています）

Here's a little something we meant to put up a long while ago, but we got caught up and distracted in other things! It's a handkerchief design we created for our friends' wedding. Their marriage was July 2010 and held in Tokyo, just after we arrived.
They asked us to include some things they liked which is why records, pens, burgers, peppers, tomatoes, nail polish and beer is everywhere.
The hankies were included in the gift bags every guest received.

They are old and very dear friends of ours and it was a great honor to be a part of their wedding in this way, especially since we live so far apart these days.

もっと早くにここで紹介できたはずだったんですが、いろんな事があってそのままになっていたOvertureデザインのハンカチーフの事を書こうと思います。

これは、２０１０年の夏に東京で結婚式をあげた友達のためにデザインを頼まれたもので、新郎&新婦の好きなもの（レコード・ペン・ハンバーガー・ビール・トマト・マニキュア・唐辛子）をそれぞれイラストにして配置して、その周りをキャラクター達が踊り回っているというものです。
このハンカチは式に出席した人達が持ち帰るお土産袋の中に入れられました。

遠く離れた友人、特に新郎はジェイソンのとても古い大切な友達。
このような形で何か記念に残るものを頼まれた事、とっても嬉しかったです。

このハンカチを貰った人が少しでも微笑ましく、幸せな気持ちになってもらえたら（彼らの事を良く知っている人は、このハンカチの柄、そしてこのアイデア自体がとても彼ららしいと感じると思います。）いいなと思いながら描きました。

Perfect Wave

Issue No. 1 of Perfect Wave is now available! There is a lot of amazing artwork, writing and music stuffed into this first issue! We weren't able to successfully embed the magazine here yet so you should head over to the site to see the whole thing! Our illustration is about two thirds of the way in but you can also jump straight to it here.
The music is, once again, by our good friend Rec.tangle, and the piece is another short sketch he wrote for our future Sesame animation.
The illustration is of a typical evening at the cafe/bar, Sesame, where Chim, the owner, works at the counter and Harold, the wandering performer, warms up the customers.
We will put a full version of the panoramic illustration here later but for now enjoy it in its intended, looping form (the ends were created to connect) with music.

今回、バックミュージックで使用されている曲はもうここではおなじみの、Rec.tangleことアドリアン・ローズです。
私達が長年取り組んでいるライフワーク的な作品「SESAME」の長編アニメーションのために作ってくれました。この曲の一部は先日公開したNOOKNOTESにも使ってますね。

（ちなみにこれが2006年に作られたパイロット版SESAMEの映像：Sesame Ⅰ　http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HAKond6Fa8）

今回、Perfectwave magazineのお話が来てまず作ってみたかったのが、横にスクロールするという特性を生かしたもの。そこから、SESAMEの物語の中に出てくるカフェ＆バーSESAMEの店内を360℃見渡しているという設定ができました。

ある日の夕暮れ、皆が仕事を終えてSESAMEに集まってくる時間。
いつものようにカウンターで店を切り盛りしているこの店のオーナーのチム（Chim）、ステージでジャグリングしてお客さんを楽しませているハロルド（Harold）、そしてこの二人の友達や仕事仲間、町の人達、町の外から来た人達でいっぱいです。
描いて描いて描きまくりました。数えてみたんですが、全部で103…かな？たぶん103くらいです。

この作品の全景バージョンもここで近いうちアップする予定です。
それまではSESAMEの店内をいろいろと探検して楽しんでくださいね。

Perfect Launch

The online magazine, Perfect Wave, which we first mentioned last summer, is finally getting a release! We have one piece of work in this issue, hopefully folks will like it! Much more on that when the thing is out in the wild.

The magazine is also having a release party on Thursday, January 13 at Zebulon from 7PM with music and readings by magazine-related people. I don't think we'll be able to make it but it sounds like a wonderful time! There's even a Facebook Event page.

We really had to share this: our sister Sara made us Bryum & Kapok dolls for Christmas this year! They are amazing and will really be keeping our spirits up during the darkest winter nights.

今年のクリスマスにジェイソンのお姉さんのSaraが私達にひとつずつプレゼントしてくれたBryumとKapokのお人形です！もちろん手編み、世界にたった一組の編みぐるみです。

この二人を作るために何度も何度もビデオを見て研究してくれたそうです…（涙）

細かい所までよーく出来てて、本当にかわいくて毎日ニヤニヤしながら眺めています。

Sara is also responsible for the Ding Dong Yeah dolls we have had for some years now and are in our fifth year anniversary photos. She also made the Overture flag that you may have seen hanging on the wall of our studio in the first Nook Notes video, which we originally designed and used for our wedding ceremony in 2007.

Saraは以前、Ding Dong Yeahsの人形も作ってくれました…これはOverture５周年記念の写真に一緒に映っています。これも大変に可愛かったです。

そうそう他にも作ってくれています。

製作日誌Nook Notesのビデオのスタジオのシーンに映っている大きな旗（今年の夏の日本旅にも持っていったので見た事ある方もいるかも）も2007年に私達が結婚パーティーのためにデザインし、彼女が製作してくれました。多彩なSaraが次に何を作って驚かせてくれるのか楽しみです！

Nook Notes: Entry 04

Here is the second of our Nook Notes video entries, a trip to Barton's Cove, the small peninsula in the Connecticut River just across the water from where we currently live and the original location for the inspiration for the animation we are working on.
It is a quiet bit of woodland and along with recent video of the area we've mixed in some photos from the camping trip that conceived the characters and story of this animation.

The music is another sketch by Rec.tangle. It is taken from the set the last short song was a part of.

制作中の映像の様子や背景をお伝えするNookNotes、今回はひとつ前のNook Notes Video（http://overture-image.blogspot.com/2010/12/nook-notes-entry-03.html）にも少し出てきていたエリアBarton's Cove(バートンズコーブ)の風景です。
バートンズコーブはコネチカット川に突き出た小さな半島で、私達の家から見える川を挟んで向こう側にあります。
この場所で夏にキャンプをした時に、Rec.tangleの音楽を持って行き、川の流れる様子や次第に暗くなっていく中で向こう岸の明かりを眺めたりしているうちに、現在作っているアニメーションのアイデアが浮かんできたのです。
ビデオでは、バートンズコーブを訪れて撮った最近の映像の中に、夏のそのキャンプで撮った写真も混ぜています。

音楽は今回もRec.tangleのものです。
Overtureの未来の作品のために制作してくれた短い曲の一部を使わせてもらいました。

Istanbul Animation Festival!

This is happening right now and for some reason we didn't even know it!
But! If you are around Istanbul this weekend check out the Instanbul Animation Festival taking place at the Pera Museum from the 16th to the 19th.
Bryum & Kapok was selected for this festival and is screening on the 19th at 1:30 PM.

We are very grateful to be a part of the festival, especially now when various threads of our life are connected to this ancient city.

フェスティバル開催期間は12/16 から19まで。（もうスタートしています）
イスタンブールのペラ美術館内のシアターで、選ばれた作品が上映される予定です。
B&Kが上映されるのは最終日の１９日、コンペティションフィルムズ・12というプログラムです。
これを知ったのはついさっき、それも偶然このフェスティバルの上映スケジュールのページにいって知りました…（笑）発表は１１月にはもうされてたみたいなんですが…見落としたんですね、きっと。
お近くの方はぜひ！私達も、ひとり友達がイスタンブールにいるのでこのニュースを教えるのが楽しみです。ペラ美術館は下の写真のような所です。素敵な会場！

Nook Notes: Entry 03

Here is a short video of us and some birds!
It is also a short video describing our current workspace and the surrounding area. The river and the dam play a large role where we are now, we see it when we wake up in the morning and hear the deep roar of the falling water when we go to bed.
At the beginning of the video when the title appears the shot is of our spot of inspiration, Barton's Cove, which is very close to us, and even visible from our studio now that the leaves have fallen off the trees.

The music, by the way, is by Rec.tangle. It is a little sketch he did for us in preparation for a feature-length animation we are slowly planning.

新作ビデオの情報をお伝えするNook Notes。
３回目は私達の現在の作業場の様子や今住んでるあたり（そして鳥、鳥、鳥達）を短い映像で紹介します。

川とダムを見下ろす現在のスタジオ・アパートメントは、朝起きると寝室の窓から眺める事が出来、夜寝るときは大量の川の水がダムに流れ込む心地よい音が遠くに聞こえます。

ちょうどタイトルが出ている所で今回のビデオのアイデアが生まれたBarton's Coveというキャンプ場のある半島が映っています。

現在ひっそりと進行中の長編作品のために、彼が作ってくれた短い印象的な曲達の中から一曲使わせてもらいました。

Kichimu Memories

Kichimu, where we held our last MoonHare exhibition and Storytellers event during our summer adventures in Japan is really an amazing space. A number of different businesses, a gallery, a restaurant, a massage parlor, a cafe and even more upstairs, all share a small but comfortable space set back from the main bustle of Kichijoji.
Recently they updated their website and included photos of our time there. These photos were taken by Nana, photographer and co-owner of Kichimu, with her sister, Ikuko Harada.

Nook Notes: Entry 02

It has been a wet week, here above the Great Falls, and though we've felt a little beaten down by the weather the drawing continues! Many animals come visiting the river when the clouds are as low as they've been and we've seen swans and red-tailed hawks and rabbits among the regular customers of geese, mallards and woodpeckers.

雪になりきれない雨がしとしと降っています。夜はマイナスになるけど昼間は15℃になったりする日もある11月にしては暖かい気候。
ニンジン、パースニップ（白いニンジンみたい）、カボチャに大根…根菜をたっぷり使った食事を取って来たるべき冬に備えます。
さて、前回のNook Notesで紹介したグンナルに引き続き、今回はもう一人の主役、オヤミちゃんの紹介です！

Anyway, this is Oyami! She is a mystery! She is connected to the forest where Gunnar lives, but she is also connected to the dark and shadows - but to fireflies as well!
She is also a wild, unknown thing and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Oyami is the other main player in the animation we are working on. Like last time, this is still just a rough sketch of her.
We will be back again soon with more details on this project!

オヤミちゃんは、グンナルの住んでいる森にいる謎の生き物です。
彼女が森に出てくるのはいつも太陽が落ちてから。暗闇と影が大好きで、蛍とは何か特別のつながりがありそうです。
森で見かけた事はあっても、オヤミちゃんの家がどこにあるのか、昼間はどこで何をしているのか、誰も知りません。
彼女が新作ビデオの主人公の一人として、グンナルとともに出てきます。どうぞよろしく！

インタヴュアーは、ベルリン在住のイタリア人、Ludag名義で活動するBruno Colajannです。

1.Hello Aya and Jason! Where are you right now?

Right now we're living in Western Massachusetts in the U.S. Lot's of old hills and forests!

2. In the August 2004 you founded your project, Overture. What do you remember of that summer day? Where did you meet for the first time?

Yes, we remember that day very well! It wasn't the first time we met, we had known each other through mutual friends for a few years at that time, but it was the first time we ever really talked. We went on a camping trip with a group of friends to Okutama, a beautiful mountainous area with deep, narrow ravines, not far from Tokyo. After dinner we found ourselves together and began talking about our interests and found our ideas and thoughts to be amazingly aligned. Everyone was gathering in a cabin but we went to an empty one and began drawing together. Talking and drawing we stayed up all night and knew that we had to continue together, something had been sparked.

3. Do you share a desk or do each of you have your own desk? Can you describe it?

Our main workspace at the moment is a long counter made of plywood and sawhorses where we have our computers and lightboards lined up. We recently moved to a cozy second floor studio/apartment overlooking a river and dam, just a kilometer from the camping spot where we thought up the animation we are currently working on. The river carries the inspiration to us! We have high ceilings and many books in our apartment, most of them belonging to the owner of the house. Plus we have a small room for painting and other messy activities. We used to work facing each other but this new setup seems to be working well!

4. Overture is an "Opera House" where you both sometimes let other people take part in your projects as well. Can you describe how a day goes by for Overture?

We may be picking up help in the near future but for the most part it is just the two of us working on projects! Even when we are working on something like an animation, the musicians involved usually don't live anywhere near us and we typically only communicate through email. In fact most of our work is like that, we really don't do much locally where we live so everything is through the internet - at least during the creation process. We were fortunate to tour Japan this Summer, doing small performances and holding a number of exhibitions and during this time we were able to actually interact with other artists and musicians in person and that was really great and a pretty fresh experience for us!

5. Can you tell me about your studies and experiences in your countries? (I guess Aya comes from Japan). When did you decide to become artists?

A: Yes, I am from Japan! I didn't go to art school but I was an artist's assistant for a while. I've just always drawn, since I was a child.

I think I decided to become an artist when I was with a real artist, working as an assistant or participating in a project.

J: I also didn't go to art school but have always just been making things. I did puppet shows when I was little and wrote stories. I don't think I've ever had a moment where I thought I wanted to be an artist, just a never ending drive to create.

6. In another world what would Jason Malcom and Aya eventually be?

A: I think I would be an animal that could do little detailed things, like a raccoon or squirrel.

J: a taveler on the Silk Road.

7. It seems music plays an important role on Your creation. Does Aya or Jason play music too?

A: We both play a bit of music, though less recently than a year or so ago.

J: I grew up playing a few instruments and singing in school through highschool. When I came to Japan I played in a number of bands and when we moved to the U.S. the two of us would meet with local friends and play music almost once a week. Especially when we are working on an animation, music is an excellent exploration tool and can be a freeing, spiritual release.

8.You did wonderful videos for indie musicians such Haushka, KiraKira and Mùm. Are there other artists you would like to work for too?

Yes, there are many artists we would like to work with! We are constantly looking to expand what kind of music we work with, looking to possibly do more rhythmically oriented pieces or possibly some kind of noise-related animation - although it really depends on what we come upon and who we meet and what the moment holds.

We are also interested in doing more performance based animation and would love to work with people like Cirque du Soleil or Royal de Luxe.

We would also like to work with live film directors for creating short pieces in films or possibly opening/closing animations. Although we are also looking to create our own feature length films in the future - animation and possibly live action as well.

9. First time I saw your creations I found your style unique and in the same time very related to Japan and North Europe imaginary. Maybe because when I was a child I used to watch cartoons as "Tanoshii Moomin Ikka" (from the lovely swedish comics series Moomin by Tove Jansson) or "Tongari Boushi no Memoru", both of them with the character design by Yasuhiro Nakura for Key Animation. Can You tell us in which way the the place where you have lived influenced your imaginary?

A: I'm not sure how much influence it had on my style, but I was born in Beppu, a city famous for its onsen (hot springs) and this certainly has been a big influence on my creations. I read a lot of books, both Japanese and foreign, as a child and over time this has become nutrition for my style.

J: I grew up in the area we live in now, spending a lot of time in the winding woods around my house and also sometimes visiting the labyrinthine hydroelectric stations my father worked at. I spent a lot of time playing by myself.

10. What about your favorite artists?

There are so many great artists who we love and who have influenced our work! We typically find ourselves drawn more to artist writers and folks with stories and ideas than visual artists, but here is a mix of some of our favorites:

Jan Svankmejer, Susan Pitt, Rene Laloux, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Tezuka Osamu, Michael Ende, Tove Jansson

11. If you could do a remake of a movie, fairytale, book, which ones would You choose?

Hmmm...we would definitely like to do an animated version of Michael Ende's Momo... we would also like to do some simpler fairytale stories, like the Billy Goats Gruff, and possibly something a bit more heavy and recent, like Nakagami Kenji's, The Immortal.

12. On "Bless", the video for the icelandic musician "Kirakira", there are a lot elements about religion, nature, fate and destiny. On the end you can see the Parcae (the Fates), that in Greek mythology were Cloto (the Youth), Làchesi (the Fertility) and Atropo (the Oldness), that can decide when it's time for you to die. Each time I see your animations I feel a deep feeling about nature, religion and mystery as something we should not be scared of. Can animation be a sort of antidote against sadness?

Certainly! Although, we don't necessarily intend anything in the creation of the animation. We do think up the stories and characters and guide the narrative, but we also try to let ideas and themes arise from our unconscious - this was especially true in Bless. Our animation reflects in many ways our lives at the time of creation, our thoughts, outlooks, activities.

13. What made you scared when you were a child? To be alone in the dark? What was your antidote?

A: I was frightened by the expanse of universe and time, especially the idea of existing in the vast space after death. I didn't have an antidote, although these feelings have dulled as I've gotten older.

J: I was afraid of the void and dangerous potential in the shadows. I have had night terrors (sleep paralysis/ kanashibari) since I was little and often thought I was being attacked or punished with electricity by monsters or the Christian God. I had a theory that whenever I thought of nice things before I fell asleep I would have bad dreams so I would force myself to consider scary thoughts in the dark of my room to hopefully have a reverse effect.

14. The style of Overture is special also because that beautiful watercolor texture You use. It's hand made or do You use special software for that?

All the watercolor technique you see in the videos are done by hand. Figuring out how to do that on a computer is a bit over our heads.

15. How long does it take to realize a video such as " Rhubarbidoo"?

Rhubarbidoo was our first kind of music video and we were still figuring out a process. I think we spent the early part of the Summer '07 on it. Generally though we plan animations to go one month for one minute. This changes depending on the type of animation, the amount of time we have to devote to the animation, and other factors.

16. What's the hardest side of your job?

Well, we only work on projects we feel match our own goals and this usually means there isn't much money involved. Having to live off very little or having to work for some kind of supplementary income is extremely taxing and drains a lot of energy we could be focusing on our work. In a similar sense marketing our work is also a side that is very trying for us.

And then balancing a normal life, eating, exercising, spending time with friends, etc. while also spending every free moment on a project is nearly impossible and really wears on our minds and emotions.

Making things, while some aspects are monotonous or difficult to get into, etc. is really a joy compared to these other elements. And while we sometimes butt heads over certain details, working together is one of the driving factors of our artwork and we love this as well.

17. What about your next projects? Will it be possible in the future to see your video and drawings all together on a book?

We have a number of projects we are currently working on and also planning on for the future! We are currently working on a new short animation, the reason for our current location (for research and inspiration), which we are hoping to wrap up by the Spring.

We are also putting together a dance/music/animation performance with KiraKira, while starting work on some book ideas using the water and ink technique we have been honing for the past while.

And then there is a feature length animation we have slowly been planning over the past few years and are currently hunting for funding while fine tuning its proposal package.

We are always looking to work on new animation projects and also want to get more involved in books. We will have a small artbook/zine released from a record label in Japan and we will see where that goes - but we would love to also put together a book collecting stills from our animations and various illustrations! We are also considering a DVD animation collection.

OPEN CIRCUIT : fatcat

This is happening! FatCat is holding their Open Circuit event at Kunstencentrum Belgie in Belgium on December fourth and some of our work will be screening at it!
Details here! In addition to the FatCat musicians playing, work by Semiconductor, Danny Peresz, Jeff Dessom, a documentary on Vashti Bunyan and others will also be screening and Shobo Shobo will have an installation of some kind.
Sounds like a good time!

来月の4日に、イギリス・ブライトンのレコードレーベル、FatCat recordsのスペシャルイベント、Open Circuitにていくつかの作品が上映される事になりました！
会場はベルギーのKunstencentrum Belgieです。
ベルギーでは、キッチンモータースのイベントで少し上映された事があるので、今回は２度目の上映になります。

ライブとインスタレーション、上映などがミックスされたイベントで、音楽での出演者はブラックダイス、ヨハン・ヨハンソン、ハウシュカ＆ゴーストピアノ（？！）。
そして、インスタレーション＆パフォーマンス＆フィルムプログラムでは、SHOBOSHOBO（フランス）やセミコンダクター（UK）、ヴァシュティ・バニヤンのドキュメンタリーなどなど…FatCatに縁のあるアーティスト大集合で大変豪華です！

Nook Notes: Entry 01

This is the first in a series of posts recording the progress on a new animation project we are working on at the moment.
It's been over a month since returning to Western Massachusetts from our Oneiric Caravan tour in Japan and much has happened during that time. And while there is still much uncertainty and a great number of details twirling in the air, one project has guided our decisions and lead us to surprising and promising territory: a new animation!
This new animation, which we've mentioned in passing before, uses the music of our good friend in Brighton, Rec.tangle, and was born out of an extended camping trip we took last year.
The camp ground we used, in Barton Cove (Gill, MA), is a small, but removed peninsula in the Connecticut River. Overlooking the water through the trees, seeing a small light from a distant cabin on the far shore gave rise to the story of this new animation where many of these elements play prominent roles.
And as fortune would have it, just as were searching out a new place to live, we were introduced to a small cozy apartment/studio up on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River, not a mile from Barton Cove! We are now able to properly research and create the animation while continuing to receive the same inspirational influences we originally received when conceiving the story and its characters!

As we begin to sink ourselves into this new world we are also on the lookout for support to enable us to devote more time over the Winter to the animation and have it ready for the Spring! So let us know if you are interested in helping us out or know of any parties who can!
In the meantime, look out for more production notes from our cozy nook on the hill!

夏の日本ツアーを終えてマサチューセッツに戻ってきてから一月半ほど経ちました。すぐですね…。
新しいアパートメントにも引っ越して（夢の”猫足バスタブ”のある家！）作業再開です！

他にもいろいろと面白い事が同時進行中なのですが、その事についてはまた後日。
今回は、現在制作中の映像の事についてです。
以前にも書きましたが、今回の映像ではイギリス・ブライトン在住のRec.tangleの新作アルバム「Heavy Maple」の中から提供してもらった曲を使用しました。
去年の夏にバートンズコーブという、コネチカット川に飛び出した小さな半島にあるキャンプ場でキャンプした時に、彼の曲を聴きながら閃いた、夕暮れの川辺で起こる物語です。

日本ツアーから帰ってきた時にいくつかの偶然が重なって出会った、今のアパートメント／スタジオは、偶然にもコネチカット川が見渡せる高台にあり、バートンズコーブのキャンプ場にもとても近いのです。
この最高のロケーションで、来年の春リリースを目指してがんばっています。

今日はその中から、メインキャラクターのひとり、グンナルの初公開スケッチです！

This is Gunnar. He is a clever fellow who works hard and bundles up properly when the weather turns cold... but what else? What are his goals and dreams and is he mischievous or kind of bashful?
And what's in his bag?

Gunnar is one of two main characters in our new animation and this is yet just a rough sketch of the guy.
Next time we will take a look at Oyami and wonder what she is about.

どうでしょう。グンナルっていう名前に合ってますか？

彼は利発で働き者で、ツンツン頭でマフラーを首に巻いて、袖を折り返したジャケットを着ています。鞄には何が入ってるのか…それは今後のお楽しみです。

そしてこのアニメーションには、もう一人のメインキャラクターがいます。
次回のNook Notesでもうひとりの主役、オヤミちゃん（女の子です！…たぶん）を紹介しようと思います。お楽しみに！

Showreel 2010!

We had a request for a showreel and seeing as we probably won't be finishing any new animations until 2011, we threw this together to see what all of our work looks like jumbled up.

ある所からの上映リクエストがあったので、最新作のBLESSも含めた2010年秋冬バージョンのショウリールを制作しました。
今回は新しい試みで、各アニメーションを混ぜたスタイルにしてみました。音楽はRec.tangleです！

BLESS has been selected for this year's DOTMOV festival! We are very honored to be picked up again, this time by Ian Anderson of The Designer's Republic, who even wrote a bit about the work:

"When the democratisation of technology means that the means of creative production is lead by technology not creativity it's refreshing to see moving art which moves you, engages the viewer, tells a story. I was hoping for something like this, something that expanded and communicated a concept rather than just being one."

「BLESS」が、SHIFT主催のDOTMOVフェスティバル2010の最終作品に選出されました！2008年の選出に続いて２度目です。

そして今回はなんとゲスト審査員の一人、デザイナーズリパブリックのイアン・アンダーソンによりピックアップされ、コメントも頂いてます〜〜！すごい！

"クリエイティブな制作の手段が、クリエティビティではなくテクノロジーによるものであるということをテクノロジーの一般化が意味するとき、感情を揺さぶり、鑑賞者を魅了し、ストーリーを語るような動きのあるアートを見るのはワクワクする。この作品を見て、何かそういうような、ただそれだけとしてあるのではなく、何かコンセプトを広げコミュニケートしていけるようなものを思いました。

今年集まった作品総数は、世界26カ国から237作品。
11月より全11作品で国内外15ヶ所以上（予定）をツアー上映で回ります。

We never mentioned this here, but during the Summer we were in an IdN book, The New Twenties, a collaboration between IdN and Society6, where we have some of our work up. There are a lot of really amazing folks in the book and we were fortunate enough to be invited to the party.

Also, on the topic of Society6, we recently made some the work we did for our Summer exhibitions in Japan available as prints on the site. These are ink and watercolor portraits of the Dreamers, the researchers who study the movements and messages of the MoonHare.

This is really only pertinent if you can read Japanese, but the wonderful Japanese site, Public-Image, which focuses on artists, designers and other creators just put up an interview they did with us!

It's the top story and really a very nice interview, performed and written up by the talented and extremely prolific Yuki Harada during our Summer trip to Japan. They actually wrote a bit about us in 2007 when Rhubarbidoo came out, but this is our first interview for the magazine.
The interview is very detailed concerning Overture's beginnings and goals and we are extremely grateful to have this opportunity! We hope this helps us find more work in Japan and possible exhibitions as well!

Oh, and also out today is an article on Overture in the magazine, Quotation. Quotation is a Japanese magazine that I think is bilingual... we'll be receiving a copy shortly and will write a fuller report on the article then!

Our site has undergone some changes! It's not spectacularly more efficient or snappier, but it is more informative! There are pages for most of our animations and illustration projects, including those for the MoonHare and Dreamer illustrations we created for the exhibitions we had in Japan this Summer.

In general, the space is now more useful!

秋の感覚/ Autumnal Ruminations

マサチューセッツに戻ってきて２週間がすぎました。
もう涼しくなったこの場所で過ごしていると、あの暑かった日本での旅の全てがもう何ヶ月も前の事の様に感じます。ついこの前なのに！
空港に着いた日から毎日雨が降り続けてましたが、VimeoフェスティバルのためにNYCに行く日になって急に晴れわたり、最高の秋の天気になりました。
最近はイベントや展示関連の書き込みばかりだったので、本当に久しぶりですがここでの生活で秋を感じるいくつかの光景を紹介しようと思います。

We'll be writing about our trip to the Vimeo Festival in a bit but we wanted to write about our return to the States a little first! We've been back for over two weeks now and have been really digging deep into the season as we try and figure out what our next move is. Seems at the moment we're going to be in the Western Mass. area here for a while longer - unless something comes calling us to distant lands.

近所の地元レストラン・デニーズ（大手のファミレスとは別物）にてクラムチャウダーを頂きました。今年の秋はいろんなクラムチャウダーの食べ比べをしてみようと考え中。隣のオイスタークラッカーは、隣のバーモント州で作っているものです。

For starters we've been making the rounds to our favorite local eateries testing out their clam chowders. We really like clam chowder and there seems to be a wide variety out there. The two most popular types seems to be a simple, but thick and creamy (classic?) version and a thinner version full of herbs and spices. Both types have their merits!

ほんの少し晴れてる間を狙って、秋恒例のリンゴ狩りです。
降り続けた雨のため、たくさんのリンゴが地面に落ちてました。枝に残ったリンゴを探してなんとか紙袋二袋分取れました。とった日から毎日リンゴ食べてます♪

And of course it wouldn't be Fall if we didn't head up for some apple picking. After two and a half months of $2 apples in Japan this is pretty much the best thing that could happen to us. Plus the place we always go is so great with a beautiful view and lots of big, healthy trees I can climb up (even though we're not supposed to).

こんないい天気でした！そしてまた次の日は雨…

ここではバスケットを借りてそこにリンゴを入れ、何個の紙袋（＆どの品種か）によって払う値段が決まります。私達はマッキントッシュという品種で紙袋ひとつ16ドル（だったと思う）でした。

そしてまた別の日、今度はバーモント州の森の中にある山小屋に越したばかりの友達を訪ねていきました。
このカップルと出会ったときから始まった秋の恒例行事、ハロウィーンのためのカボチャ彫りも今年で４年目！今回は白いカボチャと細長いオレンジカボチャを使って１組で１つずつ彫りました。
上の写真は私達のカボチャ、名前はフラン（男の子）です。
生地から手作りのピザもごちそうになり、私達はリンゴ狩りでとったリンゴを使ったケーキを持参して、お腹いっぱいの楽しい時間を過ごしました。

山小屋の外で切り株に腰掛けてカボチャを彫りました。

写真に映ってるのは友達カップルの彫ったオレンジカボチャ、名前はトニー（女の子）だそうです。

And another Autumn tradition (for the past four years!) is carving pumpkins with our friends Ryan and Emily who live up in Vermont.
This year the carving was held up in the mountains of Westminster at a lovely litte cabin.

まだまだ山ほどあるリンゴ、別の日には夏に裏庭で収穫して冷凍しておいたブルーベリーとざく切りのリンゴをたっぷり入れたパウンドケーキを作りました。

これも美味しかった！旬の食べ物（ブルーベリーは違うけど…）をつかうとなんでも美味しい！

Screening at VFA!

We will be in New York tomorrow and Saturday for the Vimeo Festival and Awards. Our animation, BLESS, nominated for an award with nineteen other videos in the Music Video category but ultimately cut out of the final five, is still screening at the festival.

It will be a part of the "Altered States" screening taking place on Friday at the SVA Theatre.

明日から、Vimeo フェスティバル＆アワード（10/8 & 9）に出席のためニューヨークに向かいます。

ニューヨークは約半年ぶり！町を巡りつつ、いくつかのワークショップや上映プログラムに参加したり、人に会ったりしようと思います。

そして、賞は逃しましたが「BLESS」がVimeoフェスティバルのオフィシャルセレクションに入り、会場で上映される事になりましたー！

上映されるプログラムは、８日の２時から３時半にSVAシアター（スクールオブビジュアルアーツのシアター）で行われる「Altered States」です。　

会場に行く事ができて（普段は遠くて行けない事が多いので）、さらにあんな大きなお祭りで作品が上映される事が決まり、嬉しい限りです。

日が経つに連れてだんだんとVimeoで6500作品から選ばれてノミネートされた事のすごさがわかってきたような気がします…。会場でたくさんの人、フィルムに出会える事、楽しみにしています。

Vimeo Awards Nomination!

A little late in posting this, but BLESS has been nominated for the Vimeo Awards in the music video category! There are currently 19 other nominated artists in the category but this will be whittled down to 5 today (9/21!), according to the website.

So we're biting our nails a bit, but either way it's a great honor to be nominated alongside so many talented folks!

We've also been invited down to attend the workshops and ceremonies they have going on during the festival (10/8 & 10/9), so regardless of today's results we'll be in the city that weekend!

Twitterアカウントでは流してましたが、ここではまだでした。

アニメーション「BLESS」が、Vimeoの主催する第一回Vimeoアワードのミュージックビデオ部門にノミネートされました！

6500作品の中から、９カテゴリ×２０組がノミネート作品として選ばれ（今ここです）、さらに５組のファイナリストが9/21（今日ですー！）にサイト上で発表されるそうです。

他のノミネート作品は、どれも今年いろんな所の映画祭で見たり＆すでに選ばれて賞をもらったりしてる方々…でもその中でリストの一番手で頑張ってます。

数時間内に結果が出るとは思うんですが、もう寝なくては…！（発表は米時間に合わせてるのでまだ出ていません／夜１２時現在）もしくは寝ないで結果が出るまで頑張るか…。

今回は会場がニューヨークと近いので、開催期間中の10/8 ＆ 9は私達も会場に行くつもりです！ワークショップを受けたり、（結果はどうあれ）セレモニーに顔を出したりするつもりです！楽しみ！！

※５組の最終選考には選ばれませんでした…残念！

でも、アワードとは関係なくVimeoフェスティバル内のプログラムで「BLESS」が上映されるかも…！これがほんとなら、初めて自分たちの映像が映画祭のスクリーンで上映される所を見る事になります！（今までは遠すぎていつも見に行けなかったので）

Green Design Festival

BLESS is getting a Greek premiere! A little while ago we were asked to include it in the Green Design Festival in Athens taking place from September 23rd to October 10th. Needless to say we were grateful for the consideration and eager to comply!

The Green Design Festival looks to be a very big event sponsored by the city of Athens and Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate change. It will look at the relationship between design and the environment and how to improve it. Sounds pretty great! I wish we could go, but being a part of it at least makes us happy.

「BLESS」のギリシャプレミアになる上映が決まりました！

ギリシャの首都アテネで9/23から10/10まで開催されるGreen Design Festivalの中のスクリーニング、GREEN SCREENINGS内で上映されます。キュレーターはUKのキュレーションエージェンシーDouble Decker。

このフェスティバルは、映像／ファッション／インダストリアルデザイン／ガーデニング／建築など、幅広い範囲で”デザインー都市ー環境”について考えることのできる作品＆プロダクトを紹介するようです。

このようなお祭りに作品が選ばれる事、ある部分で関連があると感じてもらっている事、嬉しいです。

ギリシャ！行きたかったですね〜。

Storytellers Reflections

A couple days have passed since our Storytellers at STONE. Our exhibition has also finished and we are busy preparing for the future until our time in Japan is up, mostly trying to figure out how to fit all of these meetings in before we leave.

Though only a week the exhibition at STONE proved to be the most successful yet, especially in terms of traffic. As the Kichijoji location is a ways from where we have been staying we originally only planned on visiting the gallery a few times during the week, but the first day of the show so many people came we realized we needed to be there every day.

The exhibition finished with Storytellers on Sunday which also turned out to be the most successful so far, with a full house, a wonderful lineup of musicians and an incredible Storytellers performance made possible by the collaboration of Toyama Takeo.

Toyama wrote new pieces or altered existing pieces specifically for each part of the story we had written, drawing the audience into the Storytellers world more than ever before.

There were no worries the performances would be anything less than amazing, but when we started the evening, opening the doors and once again inviting audience members to make masks with us, some folks were concerned people wouldn't be drawn into the mood of the evening. But by the time Toyama's set finished and he played Aya onto the stage the whole of Kichimu was enveloped in the Storytellers world.

It was truly a magical night.

We are extremely grateful to Toyama Takeo, Cotoribijutsukan, Sheeprint, Shinsan, all folks connected with Kichimu and everyone who came out for the event. We look forward to our next exhibition at STONE and the next opportunity to perform Storytellers or the next level of this kind performance with Toyama.

12日のStorytellers in キチムの夢のような夜からもう数日たってしまいました…そしてSTONEでの個展「Moon Hare」も展示期間を終え、これで今回の日本滞在中の全てのイベント＆展示が（一応）終了です〜！

日本にいる期間もあと２週間…ここからは、今までゆっくり会えなかった人達にどんどん会っていきます。会いまくり、話しまくります！…とその前に、吉祥寺での事を少し振り返ってみたいなと思います。

STONEでの個展は、１週間という短い展示期間にもかかわらず多くの人、それも興味を持って見に来てくれた方達をお迎えする事ができました！そして未来につながるようなとっても素敵な方達とも知り合う事ができて、本当に大収穫でした。

始まる前は、土日＋平日にも何日かは顔を出しておきたいな…というくらいの考えでいたのですが、結局毎日ギャラリーに来て接客してました。それくらい濃い日々だったのです。

吉祥寺は私達が初めて一緒に暮らし始めた町。このなじみのある場所で展示ができた事、本当に嬉しく思っています。呼ばれてるような気もするような…また住みたい〜！

この展示の最終日、12日の夜に開催されたイベント”Storytellers”は魔法がかかったような時間でした。共演の小鳥美術館さん（名古屋から来てくださいました）とOneiric Caravanを一緒に回ってきたSheeprintさん、そして今回一緒にStorytellersをやってくださったトウヤマタケオさん！

３組の音楽が、キチムに詰めかけたたくさんのお客さんを物語の世界の奥にゆっくりと誘導していくような様子が見えるようでした。

トウヤマさんは私達の作った３つの物語に合う曲を選んで、時には少しだけ変更を加えて絶妙のタイミングで演奏してくれ、それを聞いたお客さんも本当に集中して聞いてくれて、途中からはまるで誰もいない場所で物語を読んでいるような不思議な感覚に陥るほどでした。

ステージから見ていても、マスクを着けたたくさんの人が目をつぶって物語に集中して聞いていて、そして隣を見るとトウヤマさんが一番近くでピアノ演奏をしているという夢のようなシチュエーションで…すばらしかったです。

このような形式の演目を、そしてもっと広げたものを、トウヤマさんとまたやりたい！いつかできる日のためにまた精進します。

マスクを作ってくれて、あの場所で楽しんでくれた全ての人達にありがとうを！

ギャラリーのシンさん、郁子さんと奈々さん、手伝ってくださったスタッフの皆さん、共演者のみなさん、本当に素敵な夜をありがとう！

次のstorytellers、そして次にまたキチムで何かできる事、楽しみにしています。
